Rapid imaging
of particles and cells
FlowCAM is an integrated system that counts, sizes and images particles
and cells in discrete samples or in continuous flows. It is a multi
function system combining the capabilities of flow cytometry,
microscopy, imaging and fluorescence.

FlowCAM integrates multiple measurements into one
easy to use system.
Particles or cells are suspended in a liquid (usually water) which
is pumped through a flow cell. The patented optics and CCD camera
magnify and capture the image of each particle or cell and its size
and shape are measured. Measurements include length, width, area,
light scatter and fluorescence.

An interactive scattergram enables immediate recall of the images
and a review of user selected distributions. Three visualisation
modes and four levels of magnification allow users to target specific
particles or cell types from one micron and above.
FlowCAM uses a powerful new method for visually processing images.
Regions of interest in the scattergram are selected with the cursor
and all images meeting that criteria are displayed. A "target
object " can be chosen by clicking on its image and its values
used to define filter parameters. Using the filter with pattern
recognition software similar objects can be identified and displayed.
A library of species specific filters can be stored for screening
future samples.
The speed of imaging and multi measurement capability replaces
many hours of tedious microscope work. Rapid imaging of a fluid
stream is a powerful means of monitoring processes, especially where
specific shapes need to be detected and quantified.
- High-speed digital imaging with multiple measurements.
- Particle or cell size, count and shape.
- Continuous monitoring of closed systems.
- Fluorescence detection provides additional selectivity.
- Analysis of particles from 1 micron to 3 mm in diameter.
- Portable FlowCAM also available for on site analysis.
Applications include
Water Analysis…oceanographic and water applications such
as monitoring phytoplankton, ballast water, sediments and algal
blooms.
Formulations…characterising solids including cosmetic topicals,
pharmaceutical suspensions, flavour carriers, pigments and ink jet
dyes,
Biotech …discrete or continuous monitoring of enzyme and
fermentation processes.
Process monitoring…such as oil in water (produced water),
emulsions and dispersions used in the chemical, coatings, polymer
and pharmaceutical industries.
